How about a comprimise between 1 and 2. A sprung loaded Z motor. You then don't have to worry as much about getting all 4 motors perfectly in sync.
I love where this idea is going though. I can just imagine having to duck under the cables whilst a print is ongoing in the middle of the room (:P)
