Seems I might have a bad stepper driver. I swapped it and the problem moved with it. I replaced with the one I was going to use for the extruder and now all steppers move in sync and in the same direction. Now I just need to do the other bazillion steps but not bad for a Sunday. I have working Firmware including my display and it can at least home now.
